JUAN BUTTEN, THE EXPLORATIONS

Juan Butten is immersed in the emotional and spiritual explorations that many artists aspire to master and enshrine in their work.

The result of his endeavor is fully enveloped in pictorial language—painting, color, dripping, and pouring—that orchestrates the music of visual discourse.

From red, yellow, or green, unexpected forms may emerge, their stains and fluidity transporting us to a galaxy of visual encounters. The paint used by this artist is light, soft, airy, casual, and accidental, yet governed by a refined exploratory sensitivity.

Several encounters occur: form and life stem from color, which conveys a strong emotional energy where the artist seems to aim at provoking the unsaid or painting the unpaintable.

Revealing hidden emotions and intimacy It is about revealing a silent or secret emotion, a mystery, an intimacy that only emerges with the vibration of visual feeling.

We are in the realm of emotional transmission, where color, form, and space are compositional references that a good artist cannot overlook. This artist’s lyrical expression is confirmed in his recent works with great intensity and character, suggesting masses that connect us to a spiritual and psychological world.

On certain canvases, black and white coexist within narrow boundaries where territorial dispersions dissolve into botanical branches, evoking deep roots or petrified fossils. In his works, we encounter existential alterations or sublimations that associate vegetal and aquatic imagery with an existential terrestrial symphony.

Juan Butten’s expressive power is likely nourished by a contemplative state in the face of nature, highlighting visions that delve into his being.

Spontaneity and freedom in execution allow for astonishment and discovery. The viewer can achieve poetic and interpretive levels in each completed painting. Sometimes the compositions lead us to zoomorphic worlds; other times, we find ourselves in silent jungles, eternal caves, and marine spaces. There is a poetry liberated from reality, whose emotion links us to rediscovered images in the universe.

Lyrical expressionism possesses a spiritual force that situates the image within emotions and symbols that move and elevate the human spirit.

Juan Butten fits within this perception of art and seeks to convey through his work the language of his own human concerns in search of an inner truth.

This work does not aim to anchor itself in trends or movements; it leaves the traces of a spontaneous gesture freely surrendered to chance on the canvas. It represents a relatively controlled spontaneity through color and technique. Butten measures his discourse through color, reflecting a philosophical interpretation of the world and space that flows without obstacles or mediations. We have observed that, in the last ten years, many young artists have strived to develop an independent language through expressionism and lyrical abstraction. Juan Butten, in the Dominican Republic, works in this direction with clear sincerity. His work demonstrates a level of achievement that requires perseverance and dedication, qualities embodied by the artist Juan Butten.
