Sometimes you walk through the Meatpacking District simply looking to catch a glimpse of the Hudson River or to get lost in the industrial architecture, but the sidewalk always pushes you toward the glass and steel building of the Whitney. I went inside seeking the usual refuge of its galleries and stumbled upon something that completely shook my perception of a classic. The retrospective “Roy Lichtenstein: Like New”<\/em> is not your typical accumulation of famous paintings hung in a row just for people to take photos; it is an intellectual and deeply human X-ray that forces you to look at Pop Art through a different lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We all know Lichtenstein\u2019s perfect tears, comic-book blondes, and warplanes. However, what is truly moving about this exhibition is the invisible, yet incredibly powerful thread woven by its curators. The brilliance of Meg Onli and the audacity of guest curator Alex Da Corte manage to rescue Lichtenstein from the cold pedestal of the auction market to bring him back to life as a visionary. Supported by David Crane and Nakai Falc\u00f3n, this curatorial team successfully assembled a colossal puzzle of over 130 works that, instead of boring you with a rigid timeline, hurls uncomfortable questions at you about the era we live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Onli and Da Corte\u2019s thesis is brilliant: they show us that long before Instagram, memes, or artificial intelligence existed, Lichtenstein already understood how images are cropped, altered, travel, and lose their original meaning. Standing before the monumental Greene Street Mural<\/em>, with its breathtaking 96 feet in length, or seeing the eight legendary paintings from his 1962 debut at the Leo Castelli Gallery reunited once again, one realizes that those hand-painted Ben-Day dots were not a mere visual trick. They were a prophecy of our current pixels. The curatorial work shines brightest by seamlessly weaving these pieces with appropriation artists like Sturtevant or Louise Lawler, transforming the fifth-floor galleries into a living debate about what is truly original in a world saturated with copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I left the museum walking down the stairs, thinking about the intimate sketches from his final year of life kept in the third-floor gallery, feeling that the curators pulled off the hardest miracle in contemporary art: taking a historical titan, stripping down his process, and presenting him to us fresh, relevant, and profoundly human.
