An Inspiring Encounter at Monserrat College of Art

Recently, we had the honor of being invited to Monserrat College of Art, a distinguished institution that trains artists ready to make an impact in the global art market. The warm welcome we received marked the beginning of an enriching day in which we shared our vision of art, our creative process, and how we address crucial issues such as the impact of plastic on our planet.

The visit began with a meeting with Liz Nofziger, a curator and educator at Monserrat College of Art. This experience proved to be as inspiring as it was educational. Before our talk with students and educators, we had the privilege of attending the PLUS exhibition, curated by Dr. Lynne Cooney. Cooney, a renowned curator, historian, and director of exhibitions and galleries at the institution, presented a flawless show that earned our admiration. We seized the opportunity to personally congratulate her on her excellent work.

Subsequently, we moved to a spacious room where students and members of the educational staff began to arrive. Our presentation included a 5-minute video about the issue of plastic in the Dominican Republic, produced and directed by Rosa Valdez. This audiovisual piece served as an introduction to our work and set the stage for the conversation that followed. After the video, Saniego Sánchez, the director of the Punto Art Museum and our liaison with Monserrat College of Art, began the discussion, focusing on our participation in the Casas + Islas exhibition. Architect Yinette Guzmán, who played a crucial role as interpreter, facilitated the dialogue between us, the students, and the professors.

The conversation flowed naturally and extensively, lasting over an hour, and allowed for a rich exchange of ideas. This dialogue would not have been possible without the kindness of Saniego Sánchez and the skill of Yinette Guzmán as interpreter. The day was undoubtedly unforgettable.

After the meeting, we were invited to explore an exhibition curated by a senior student, which turned out to be a true marvel. We then visited the institution’s workshops, where we were impressed by the wide range of tools and equipment available, from ceramics to 3D printing machinery. The passion of the professors, evident in their dedication and interaction with students, demonstrated that Monserrat College of Art ranks among the most prestigious art schools in the United States.

The experience at Monserrat College of Art was a celebration of art and education, marked by the palpable synergy between students and professors. The institution not only offers cutting-edge resources but also fosters an environment that promotes creativity and commitment. We sincerely thank Monserrat College of Art for giving us the opportunity to share our ideas and for allowing us to experience their impressive facilities.
