LA TRIENAL 2024: States of Flow – Museo del Barrio, New York

museo del barrio juan butten trienal 2024

Yesterday, I attended a discussion about the Triennale 2024 at the Museo del Barrio in New York, where the curators involved discussed the details of this anticipated cultural event titled States of Flow. This is the second major exhibition of contemporary Latinx art at the museum, organized by chief curator Rodrigo Moura, curator Susanna V. Temkin, and guest curator María Elena Ortiz. The exhibition will feature 33 artists working in the United States, Puerto Rico, and for the first time, will extend to new geographies that reflect the complexities of diasporic flows, including artists based in the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia.

The title States of Flow emphasizes plurality and a sense of movement, serving as a play on words about creative approaches and the fluidity of geographical borders and cultural exchanges. This phrase connects with diasporic themes, broadly defined as the dispersion, scattering, and flow of populations, languages, and cultures that inform the exhibition. The selected artists share interests related to transformation, the porosities of landscape and built environments, spiritual connections, collective memories, hybrid belongings, and material exchanges. This edition is built upon the framework of the acclaimed ESTAMOS BIEN – LA TRIENAL 20/21, the first survey of contemporary Latinx art in the United States. Additionally, States of Flow will be accompanied by a fully illustrated, bilingual publication.
